congress that convenes next month. somber scenes of mourning played out once again today in newtown, connecticut. while in washington, president obama walked into the white house briefing room named for james brady-- the press secretary critically wounded in the shooting of president reagan in 1981-- to talk about gun violence. >> the fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing. >> ifill: instead, in the wake of the massacre at sandy hook elementary school, mr. obama said, "this time, the words need to lead to action" on gun violence. >> the vast majority of responsible law abiding gun owners would be some of the first to say that we should be able to keep an irresponsible law breaking few from buying a weapon of war. i'm willing to bet that they don't think that using a gun and using common sense are incompatible ideas. there is a big chunk of space between what the 2nd amendment means and having no rules at all. >> reporter: to that end, the president announced vice president biden and an administration team will craft recommendations on everyth

of dangerous people, there would be fewer atrocities like the one in newtown. or any of the lesser known tragedies that visit small towns ss america every day. >> the president today getting pretty specific about what kind of reform he is aiming for. he also explained his plan for how to get there, which is also a pretty specific plan. >> the fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing. the fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence. and prevent the very worst violence. that's why i've asked the vice president to lead an effort that includes members of my cabinet and outside organizations to come up with a set of concrete proposals no later than january, proposals that i then intend to push without delay. this is not some washington commission. this is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read and then pushed aside. this is a team that has a very specific task, to pull together real reforms right now. i asked joe to lead this

and washington working together, negotiating on this bill and what happened in newtown. but in middle america, nothing happens in a bubble. people are still shattered by that. and anybody that is dragging their feet, fighting, seeming petty less than a week after -- i'm sorry, this is the worst tragedy i can think of as far as just shattering the soul of this country. i say since 9/11, in my lifetime. 9/11 and this. then i guess you'd have to go back to kennedy's assassination. i can't believe how shaken -- people are just talking about this all the time. they're looking at washington squabbling over numbers. and since they've already decided on the big issues, they're just thinking, they're so dysfunctional. and whoever gets the blame for this, it's in big trouble politically. >> no question. and it's not just on the fiscal stuff. it's on other things, too. i mean, you know, i thought your incredibly eloquent statement last week reflects what a lot of people feel including a lot of people who have had reservations before about doing something. that fight's just about to begin. the high water
